The effect of concurrent infection with Trichinella spiralis on Hymenolepis microstoma in mice.

The intestinal changes brought about by rejection of Trichinella spiralis from mice were studied in relation to their effects on a concurrent infection with Hymenolepis microstoma, a cestode not normally rejected from mice. The rejection phase of T. spiralis was associated with a marked stunting of growth of H. microstoma given just before, during, or just after rejection of the nematode. The s...

Order of Inoculation during Heligmosomoides bakeri and Hymenolepis microstoma Coinfection Alters Parasite Life History and Host Responses

Parasite life history may differ during coinfection compared to single infections, and the order of infection may be an important predictor of life history traits. We subjected laboratory mice (Mus musculus) to single and coinfections with Heligmosomoides bakeri and Hymenolepis microstoma and measured life history traits of worms and also hepatobiliary and morphological responses by the host. W...

The golden hamster as a definitive host of Taenia solium and Taenia saginata.

Immunosuppressants have been extensively used to increase the susceptibility of various laboratory animals to several species of nematodes (Campbell , 1963; 1968; Campbell & Collette, 1962 ; Di Netta , Katz & Campbell , 1972 ; Miller, 1966; Mougeot & Lancastre, 1970 ; Parker, 1961; Ritterson, 1959 ; Wiest, 1972; Wakelin, 1970). Only a few of these compounds have been used to increase susceptibi...

Target gene enrichment in the cyclophyllidean cestodes, the most diverse group of tapeworms.

The Cyclophyllidea is the most diverse order of tapeworms, encompassing species that infect all classes of terrestrial tetrapods including humans and domesticated animals. Available phylogenetic reconstructions based either on morphology or molecular data lack the resolution to allow scientists to either propose a solid taxonomy or infer evolutionary associations. Molecular markers available fo...

Composition and structure of helminth communities in two populations of Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from Spain.

The community composition and structure of helminths of Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Schreber, 1774) from two widely separated Spanish localities, El Saler (n = 42) and the San Pedro pothole (n = 34), were determined and compared. Five species of trematodes, Plagiorchis (Plagiorchis) sp., Lecithodendrium (Lecithodendrium) linstowi Dollfus, 1931, Prosthodendrium (Prosthodendrium) sp., Pycnoporus h...
